Above: A Property tax receipt for George Florida dated
July 13, 1886. Florida purchased the mills, water rights, land, and house just two days before his uncle's death.

Right:The grist mill, which produced flour exhibited at the World's Fair in 1893.
Our classes for 2012 have focused on the milling industry in Rockford. Winter lectures discussed the lumber, flour, and woolen mills that operated along the Crow River until the turn of the century. Courtesy of a grant from the Children's First Foundation, the Flour Milling presentation is being adapted for use in the Rockford Middle School.

Summer programming will continue to focus on sustainable lifestyles, such as growing your own veggies, planting native Minnesota grasses and flowers, and attracting helpful insects and birds to your yard. Saturday programs, as well as our Teen Night Thursdays (5-7 p.m. during June, July, and August) would be the perfect time to come share your experiences!
